A Place for Everything & Everything in it's Place: Get Organized!

I like organized surroundings. I'm not a minimalist, but I don't like filling areas with things. I like space to breathe! Yes, I'm slightly claustrophobic, but even people who aren't claustrophobic are negatively affected by clutter and disorder. Chaos externally produces chaos internally. Clutter can reduce productivity, cause embarrassment, and drain our energy. (An article on Verywell Mind states that more serious effects include physical, emotional, and mental repercussions of feeling overwhelmed and unable to change the problem leading to chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.)

Conversely, organized surroundings increase productivity, create confidence, and contribute to our energy. There are additional benefits to being organized such as knowing where everything is (saves time and money), less time cleaning (stuff isn't everywhere), and less stress (better sleep and health). When you take control of your belongings, you'll enjoy your home more.

So what if one of the reasons that everything isn't in "its place" is because you don't have "a place for everything"? One solution is to let go of some of your possessions. Probably most people would benefit from annual spring cleaning which includes purging items in our home. If you don't use it or love it consider getting rid of it. If the objects are in good condition sell or donate them; you'll feel better about parting with them!

Another solution could be shelving. Shelving can be attached to walls or freestanding. Custom built-in shelving provides a lot of storage space and adds value to your home.

Custom Built-In Bookcase

I especially like built-in shelving that you can put furniture in front of.

Or floor-to-ceiling shelving with a cool library ladder.

Shelves are useful in every room.

... as a doorway to another room! This photo was taken of a fireplace surround our company built. The second section from the left is a doorway into the client's bedroom. Trim was added around each section (after this picture was taken) to conceal the gap and make the entire unit cohesive.

This is another custom built-in by our company.

Aren't shelves impressive? They can be simple or ornate, large or small, decorative as well as functional, add character to a room, and even lead to another room! They are a powerful but underutilized design element and storage champion. The only downside is you may become addicted to shelving (as I may be).

Of course, some items in your home are better hidden behind doors (or under seats). Cabinets can be incorporated into built-ins for even more storage.

Take control of your belongings. Eliminate some things and organize the rest. Incorporate shelving and cabinets in your home (and your garage). Save your sanity and (some of) your stuff!

We would be happy to help you design and install storage solutions for your specific needs.
